A year ago my fretboard was a mystery. When I looked at it, all I could see was the wood, strings and frets. I couldn’t see the notes. Like most guitarists, I had to rely on tab to play music which meant I had to listen to the music before I could play it.
I was so frustrated and I felt stuck. I didn’t know where the notes were, so I couldn’t improvise or jam along with backing tracks or other musicians. I tried several ways of learning them, but nothing worked.

So I decided to create my own system. You should have seen my early attempts! I placed ‘notes’ in various places around my house. That was a joke. Next I tried to sleep learn them. Another waste of time. Then I tried repetition… every day I’d look at a wall chart with the notes on and say them out loud... Ha! That didn’t work either.
Then I remembered my memory training from when I played chess. A few years ago I could play chess without seeing the board - and beat players who had the board in front of them!
How did I do it? I’ll come to that in a just minute...
For now, imagine if you could name what 3 notes make up a typical chord, or know all the notes in any scale or key? Where would that take your playing?
