How to play guitar without guitar tab

Clive Cable - Inventor of the world's easiest music memory system - FretMemory - and keynote speaker at the London Guitar Show 2006

Dear Friend

A year ago my fretboard was a mystery. When I looked at it, all I could see was the wood, strings and frets. I couldn’t see the notes. Like most guitarists, I had to rely on tab to play music which meant I had to listen to the music before I could play it.

I was so frustrated and I felt stuck. I didn’t know where the notes were, so I couldn’t improvise or jam along with backing tracks or other musicians. I tried several ways of learning them, but nothing worked.

"I have used many methods to remember my notes in the past, but none have ever really helped. Fret Memory is a refreshingly new way of making effort easy. The way Fret memory uses graphics, words and sounds really does help in gaining better knowledge of the fretboard."

Mike Smale

So I decided to create my own system. You should have seen my early attempts! I placed ‘notes’ in various places around my house. That was a joke. Next I tried to sleep learn them. Another waste of time. Then I tried repetition… every day I’d look at a wall chart with the notes on and say them out loud... Ha! That didn’t work either.

Then I remembered my memory training from when I played chess. A few years ago I could play chess without seeing the board - and beat players who had the board in front of them!

How did I do it? I’ll come to that in a just minute...

For now, imagine if you could name what 3 notes make up a typical chord, or know all the notes in any scale or key? Where would that take your playing?

Just by knowing where every note is on your guitar you’ll naturally start gaining the essential knowledge of music theory and move beyond the limitations of tab. Don’t get me wrong, I think tab is okay... in fact it’s useful, it got me started. But with tab you have to listen to the music before you can play it.

This can be annoying if the music you want to learn is only available in ‘dot’ form. Also, there are more and more teaching DVDs that expect you to know where all the notes are on your guitar.

If you’re taking lessons from a guitar teacher, think how much further you’d go AND the money you’ll save if you didn’t have to waste valuable lesson time remembering where your notes are.

When you know your notes you’ll be able to:

guitar bonus    Instantly know where any note is, in any position, on any string

guitar bonus    Unleash your ability to improvise or jam along to backing tracks or other players

guitar bonus    Finally understand chords and the notes within them

guitar bonus    Unravel the mystery of scales and modes

guitar bonus    Never be embarrassed playing a wrong note again

guitar bonus    Know how to play the right note in any position over the right chord

guitar bonus    Get on the fast track to reading music and tabs quicker

guitar bonus    Learn new songs in half the time

guitar bonus    Play more of your favourite music

guitar bonus    Start writing your own songs with ease

guitar bonus    Impress others with your new playing confidence

The only thing that stands between you and fret mastery is your memory! Most people never realise the most important part of learning is remembering. That’s why most people struggle to learn where the notes are on their guitar.

Here’s how your memory works:

Some people say to me they have a bad memory, but I know that there's no such thing as a bad memory... only bad input. Your mind already knows how to recall what you learn effortlessly.

Try this...

...remember your first kiss… do you remember who it was? Where you were? You've seen that image in your mind several times since then, haven’t you?

That’s because...

...it went into your short-term memory... with emotion. You recalled the location using association. Then you repeated it over and over, until it went into your long-term memory. Can you improve your memory by copying your natural way of learning?

Yes, you can!

And it’s deceptively simple… think of a triangle… how many sides has it got? Now think of a square… how many sides does it have? If you can do this you’ll love what’s coming next.

Here’s the best part...

I’d like to show you my proven system to master your fretboard called FretMemory. You’ll memorise the notes on your fretboard... in less than 30 minutes! What’s more, you’ll be using your natural way of learning and remembering - it’s so easy a child can do it!

More than just
passive learning...

If you’ve ever read any book on music theory, you’ll know there’s nothing in that book that actually helps you to remember. That’s because it uses the least effective method known - passive learning.

One of the things you’re really going to love about FretMemory is it’s so easy to use. That’s because I’ve taken giant steps to get you recalling the notes on your fretboard by giving you an audio CD. On this CD, I’ll personally lead you through every step of the way of this unique experience.

I’ve also created a visual guide because study after study has shown if you combine visual with sound learning is automatic. In the playbook you’ll find key images that form a system for instant recall. You’ll be using association... location... and imagination... the best strategy for learning and remembering anything!

Imagine how good you’ll feel when you can name every note on your guitar and use this new ability to take your playing to the next level.

“I tried out the FretMemory system admittedly as a sceptic, but was forced to eat my words as, within a surprisingly short time span, I started to successfully name notes on the fly. I think it’s an excellent idea and one that could make a huge change to teaching and learning.”

Rob Sandall,
Guitar Buyer Magazine

“FretMemory Volume 1 is absolutely brilliant. After playing guitar for 15 years, doing the pubs and clubs as a one-man-band and backup for vocalists, I still can't read music. I found FretMemory invaluable for remembering the fretboard, and now have a totally new insight into the the guitar. I can't wait to try volume 2!”
